(1) R- Lesson Title: Paper beads
Description/Theme:
Students will learn about cultures from around the world by looking at the various types of beads they make and the many meanings and uses for these beads. Then, students will make their own beads which they will be able to wear home with them after class.
Objectives:
- Learn about the importance of art and craft, particularly beadmaking, in a diverse range of cultures around the world.
- Gain an understanding of colors and design
Procedure:
First students will cut up magazine pages of their choosing (based on color) into thin vertical strips, tapered towards one end. Each strip is rolled towards the tapered end, which is glued with a glue stick before being completely rolled up. Students can then “glaze” their beads and string them on either a necklace, anklet, or bracelet sized string.
Materials:
- magazines
- glue sticks
- modge podge, marvin medium, or diamond glaze
- scissors
- Paint brushes
- news paper

Can you think of any other cultures that use beads?
Can Magazines be recycled even though it has glossy paper? - Yes
Reflection:
We worked with the students making beads and pendants out of old magazines. Randy gave a beginning discussion and presentation on the culture of beads. The students were very engaged in the presentation especially photos that were shown. The kids did just fine creating the beads from the magazines, however some struggled to get motivated and had trouble with some coordination skills for rolling the beads. The all attempted to make at least five beads and if they had time a pendant to put on the necklace. Mostly the class went well, however there were a few things we need to work on. For setting up we need to make sure the projector works before attempting to use it or have an alternative way to present. We need to make sure we have more authority with the students in the classroom, we are the teachers we make the rules. Lastly we need to work on managing our time making sure there is a beginning of class, a middle, and an end to reflect and review.
Looking Back now that the class is finished:
I feel that I would have demonstrated another way to roll the beads for kids who had trouble with coordination in rolling the beads. Overall the most of the students had some really great beads to show by the end, but I will we could have made them keep there beads and relate that particular lesson to other lessons that we have had. These first two lessons were the most distant from our overall lesson in the class of studying different aspects of recycled are and art in the environment.
